Joy in the Time of COVID

So many moments of wonder,
Of joy
To hold high and to honor –

A real live letter from a student pen pal
Colleagues who find strength in one another
The college son who just feels like a chat
Blue skies, uninterrupted
A new recipe that works
Walks with friends
Watching people you love do what they love

All these moments of wonder,
Of joy
Flutter and wave about –

And yet.
But still.

I cannot remember the last time,
Passing by a flag,
That I have seen it raised
Above
Half mast.

That’s true. Old Glory hasn’t been atop a flagpole in awhile.

  2. Fran Haley Says:

Such a mixture of daily joys contrasted with the beautiful (for it is) flag in its sad half-place. “Hold high and honor” – those words really strike deep – you were referring to joy, but … our flag.Joy fluttering and waving about … but, the flag.So few words in your verse but they’re blanketed in such powerful metaphor. Beautifully rendered. Leaves one with an ache…but, when I think about it, joy does that, too.
